Is Community Volunteers for me?
dlr Community Volunteers is a group of volunteers managed and supported by Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Volunteer Centre These volunteers help support once-off events and urgent community responses.
Once you’re signed up, we will share different volunteer opportunities with you. These opportunities are only available to Community Volunteers.
You can then sign up for the events that interest and suit you.
Giving you the choice of a variety of volunteer roles, that fit into your schedule.
Why dlr Community Volunteers matters?
During Covid-19 we saw the need to mobilise volunteers quickly – the Community Volunteers programme was our answer. It allows us, to create a diverse group of trained volunteers who are on standby. Who can respond quickly and effectively to provide urgent community support in times of local and national need. These volunteers also help build social capital by supporting local community events in their area. The Community Volunteers programme is a practical, hands on way to volunteer and make a difference.
What will community volunteers do?
Volunteer at once off events
This could include supporting local events, such as community festivals, parades, concerts, sporting events, environmental events or clean ups etc.
Support urgent community needs
This could be in response to a national crisis such as COVID-19, a local disruption such as a weather event or water shortage, or simply a local need that could be met by volunteers acting quickly. Most recently, our Community Volunteers have facilitated donation hubs for Ukrainians and Asylum seekers arriving to the County.
How often will I volunteer
As a dlr Community Volunteer you will be invited to sign up to any available Community Volunteer roles. You can get involved as often or as little as you like. Many events are once off and ask volunteers to give a couple of hours.
Who can volunteer?
dlr Community Volunteers is ideally suited to people who want to meet new people and get involved in different kinds of events. No previous experience of volunteering is needed and we welcome volunteers with limited or basic English. Volunteers will need to be enthusiastic, reliable and able to volunteer within a diverse team.
As a Community Volunteer there will be a variety of roles that you may take part in. Some will suit those who are comfortable being outdoors and on their feet. Often you will need to be comfortable dealing with new people and relating to the public in a positive and friendly way. Community Volunteers should be over 18.
How do I sign up?
To become a Community Volunteer, you sign up with us, your local volunteer centre, and compete a 4-step screening and training process, outlined below.
1. Register your interest.
2. Watch a 15 minute informational video on I-Vol.
3. Meet the DLR Volunteer Centre staff via zoom.
4. Attend the Community Volunteers zoom training session.
Once you’ve completed the 4-step training process, you become a Community Volunteer! You will then be able to sign up to available roles.
