Project Description
Christin shares his experiences supporting and protecting biodiversity.
Project 1. Stepping Stone Forests (Volunteer): This is a small, densely planted forest using Irish native species of trees and shrubs. The idea is inspired by Japanese botanist Prof. Akira Miyawaki. They are planted on existing areas of lawn in public parks, open spaces, school & college grounds, business campuses, etc. Mr. John Kiberd is the one who leads this project. Through this project, I have learned about climate change, the importance of biodiversity, some of the native Irish trees and shrubs’ names, how to protect them, and how everything is connected to each other. The best part of the project is creating tiny forests as an outdoor classroom for school students where they can connect with nature and learn about them. Educating young minds are one of the best ways to protect the future of our planet.
Project 2: Flossie and the Beach Cleaners (Volunteer): I was involved in a few beach clean-ups in county Dublin. One of the main purposes of this organization is to educate about plastic pollution and how we all can make a difference for cleaner seas and a brighter future. Every team member is passionate about saving the seas and sea creatures from plastic pollution.
Project 3: Woods Town Village Wildlife (Volunteer): The aim is to spread awareness of biodiversity found within Woodstown and beyond by providing educational posts. The main idea of this project is to manage the community area as a pollinator-friendly zone. I volunteered in their project to plant fruit trees (apple trees, plums, etc). They educated me about the importance of bees (e.g.: Bumblebees), butterflies, and other animals connected to the food chain. I always tried to pass this knowledge on to my friends and my social media followers.
Project 4: Citizen Scientist: Recently, I started working as a Citizen Scientist in the National Biodiversity Data Centre of Ireland. This Project helps with evidence-based decisions to protect our biodiversity. Biodiversity recording will help to understand the species number and its distribution across Ireland.
