Supporting people arriving from Ukraine

Just like when COVID-19 hit, we have been inundated with requests from people asking how they can volunteer to support people arriving in Ireland from the Ukraine. Here in Dún Laoghaire Rahtdown Volunteer Centre we’ve been supporting where we can and so far have been matching translators with local needs, running a donation hub and of course continuing our regular work with local organisations. Check out our list of actions below for ways that you can help individuals arriving in Dún Laoghaire Rathdown from Ukraine.

Actions for individuals

  • Interested in volunteering in practical or hands-on volunteer roles?
    We’d encourage you to register with us on I-VOL and then to send us an email on placement@volunteerdlr.ie noting your interest in receiving updates regarding volunteering to support Ukraine. We’ve seen a large number of requests to volunteer and at present this demand exceeds the roles available via I-VOL.
  • Donating goods – a list of organisations coming soon
  • Pledge accommodation via the Irish Red Cross – learn more here
  • Making a financial contribution
    • DLR County Council are currently accepting vouchers and distributing them to Ukrainian citizens in DLR to enable them to purchase basic items that they require – more information here.

Actions for organisations & businesses

  • Businesses can pledge offers of supplies and services to help Ireland’s humanitarian response to the Ukraine crisis. Access the Government portal to pledge here.
  • Community Groups, organisations and local clubs in DLR can add opportunities and services you are providing (or hope to provide) which are open to Ukrainians. The DLR Public Participation Network will collate information to create a map for each area in DLR. List your services here.

A quick note regarding Ballyogan Regional Temporary Rest Centre

This facility, run by Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, will be the East Region Temporary Rest Centre facility and will accommodate up to 300 displaced Ukrainian Nationals for short periods. Thereafter they will be allocated longer term accommodation in other areas of the state. The Centre is only in the early stages of opening and the need for volunteers is yet to be determined. We hope to learn if/how volunteers might be involved there in the coming weeks. As stated above, we’d encourage you to register with us on I-VOL and then to send us an email on placement@volunteerdlr.ie noting your interest in receiving updates regarding volunteering to support Ukraine – this will help us to update you when we learn more about the Ballyogan Regional Temporary Rest Centre.
