Project Description

More than 1/3 of all food is wasted.  That’s 1.3 billion tonnes every year according to The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).  If food waste were a country, it would be the 3rd largest emitter of greenhouse gases after the US and China causing 3.3 billion tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions a year.

Could you find ways to reduce your food waste? We love the Stop Food Waste website for handy tips and ideas. Check out these five tips to get you started. They also have a very handy A-Z of storage tips for food, to help avoid waste through incorrect storage.

Do check out their downloadable resources too.

Odile Le Bolloch also recommended these short YouTube Food Waste Prevention videos: Video Playlist.

You might also like to explore the Too Good to Go app. Using this app, you can save food from retail outlets by reserving a magic bag at a much reduced price. Find out more here. There are participating businesses in DLR.

Do also check out Olio, the sharing app, where you can share food with others so that it doesn’t go to waste. OLIO connects neighbours with each other and with local businesses so surplus food can be shared, not thrown away. This could be food nearing its sell-by date in local stores, spare home-grown vegetables, bread from your baker, or the groceries in your fridge when you go away. For your convenience, OLIO can also be used for non-food household items too.People based in these locations in Ireland are sharing food now.
